Exercise Physiology – Who Can Benefit?

Sore Neck

Exercise physiology specialises in a physical therapeutic approach to promoting health and wellbeing.

Our exercise physiologists (EP’s) are located in Gateshead making them accessible to all in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas.

When starting with a new client, our EP’s will conduct a functional assessment which considers things such as postural, functional, and orthopaedic factors. This thorough testing and screening process enables our EP’s to gather the most specific information possible. They then use this information to plan an exercise regime for the client. This might involve applying exercise prescription in short term day-to-day programs through to more advanced long term or ‘periodised’ programs.

You will find our EP’s working with clients in our dedicated exercise centre but they can also work in different environments such as hydrotherapy pools, their homes or parks and sporting fields.

Our EP’s work with clients from paediatric (children) through to geriatric (elderly) ages and with individuals who participate in sport from amateur through to elite levels. They can also assist in specialist areas such as with people that have:

  • Cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, or heart failure
  • Musculoskeletal conditions, including chronic lower back pain or shoulder rotator cuff injuries
  • Neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease or cerebral palsy
  • Metabolic conditions, including obesity, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease
  • Different forms of cancer
  • Pulmonary conditions, including asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Mental health conditions

An EP must have a minimum of 4 years study at university level, where they initially complete qualifications in exercise science, after which they move onto exercise physiology completing over 400 hours in clinical placement across the two study streams.
