Physiotherapy (or "physio" as it is commonly called) refers to the practice of a professional who assesses and provides maintenance and restoration services to help improve the body's physical function and performance. If your body is not performing at an optimal biomechanical level, you will inevitably run into problems and develop imbalances and/or dysfunctions (restricted movement, etc.) that lead to pain/injury and decreased performance. Physiotherapy can be used as an adjunct to other healthcare services, such as the recovery process following certain surgical procedures. Although physiotherapy can also be provided in conjunction with medical advice or medication, it is usually applied in isolation as a therapy of choice (such as in injury management). In cases where physiotherapy is provided in combination with other medical/allied health therapies, it can help provide longer lasting relief or speedier recovery times after injuries. Our Newcastle and Lake Macquarie physiotherapists will assess a range of factors which may be contributing to any joint and muscle pain and/or restricted movement you may be experiencing. Musculoskeletal problems are frequently caused by:
Our physiotherapists are able to provide support to help you correct these issues. We take a holistic approach to treatment, rather than identify sets of symptoms and simply put a "band aid" over them. This approach reduces the likelihood of issues recurring and worsening. At Macquarie Physiotherapy, we will apply evidence-based techniques to address the underlying cause of your symptoms. Our treatments will vary depending on what the presenting physio condition is, but commonly we provide:

Back problems are the third most common reason people take time off work (just behind common headaches and colds). They are the second most common reason people go and see their GP. It is believed that approximately 8 in 10 people in western countries suffer from some form of back pain at least occasionally.
Back pain or back ache is a symptom that can arise from many causes including arthritis, muscle and ligament strains, disc lesions, osteoporosis and stress. Stresses on the muscles and ligaments that support the spine result in both lower and upper back pain
Commonly associated with lower back pain is sciatica, a condition characterised by sharp, "electric" pain that can radiate into the legs. Sciatica is so named as it is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, and it is caused by a number of factors including:
At Macquarie Physiotherapy, we deal with a high volume of cases of back pain/injuries. Our staff undertake a comprehensive interview and physical examination to determine the exact cause of your back pain. We will develop a lower back pain treatment program personalised for your requirements. Our physiotherapists can provide a variety of treatments, help you understand your condition, help you get back to your normal activities and advise you on how to prevent symptoms returning.
If you are one of the many Australians that suffers with neck pain, you will be pleased to know that our proven physiotherapy techniques may offer the solution you have been searching for.
Neck pain is very common, with about 1 in 10 people having it at any given time. It often comes as a result of sitting in front of a computer, watching prolonged periods of television and poor posture (particularly forward head posture)
Problems within the neck can also cause headaches, shoulder pain, TMJ or jaw pain, pins and needles in the hands, carpal tunnel syndrome and upper back pain.
If you suffer from any of the symptoms below, we encourage you to contact our Newcastle or Lake Macquarie physiotherapists as soon as possible:

Painful shoulder conditions that limit movement are very common, and are frequently caused by injuries affecting the shoulder joint, muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. As the shoulder has a high degree of flexibility, it is less stable and more prone to injuries than other joints of the body. Since the nerves that supply the shoulders and arms originate from the neck and upper spine, conditions such as vertebral dysfunction commonly contribute to pain in the shoulder.
At Macquarie Physiotherapy, we can assist for a range of shoulder conditions, including:
Elbow injuries are frequently the result of high-impact repetitive use. A common example is tennis elbow, which can manifest pain that radiates down the forearm. The lifting of heavy objects can also result in elbow pain. It is important to understand that your feet have a direct direct impact on the rest of your body. A small abnormality in foot function can have a large impact on joints higher up in the body, causing pain and discomfort.
When you are running, the pressure on your feet can be three or four times your body weight. Even walking can produce more pressure than the sum of your body weight. The American Podiatric Medical Association says that the average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day. That adds up to about 115,000 miles in a lifetime or more than four times the circumference of the globe. That is a lot of walking with ill-fitting shoes or painful feet!
In some cases, foot ailments can be an early signal of more serious medical problems, like arthritis or diabetes.
Our physiotherapists will measure biomechanical problems that are causing pain and/or dysfunctions in your feet and ankles. We will use this information to address the problems using the most appropriate treatment techniques.
At Macquarie Physiotherapy, we can provide assistance for:

Our hydrotherapy services are performed at Valentine Community Pool. The usual process for our hydrotherapy treatments is for our physiotherapist to meet you at the pool. Using the information supplied on the referral, and having discussed your condition, one of our physiotherapists will then run you through a series of exercises specific to your needs.
You will be supplied with a document of the exercises covered. Normally, the expectation will be that you exercise independently for 2-3 weeks. After this stage, the physiotherapist will meet you again at the pool to review your exercise program and update it as appropriate. This will depend on the specifics of your condition.
The cost of the initial session is $73.00 and the review is $63.00. You can use your private health fund for a rebate or these can be covered by EPC, DVA, Workers' Compensation or CTP (assuming the paperwork is in place), plus entry charges at Valentine Community Pool.
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your time in the pool to fill out the necessary paperwork.
